The kitchen always seems to be the hub of households. It’s a place where meals are prepared, morning coffee is sipped, conversations are shared, and memories are made. And for me, it’s the first space my guests are welcomed in to. I have high hopes to remodel my kitchen in the near future and I want to create a beautiful, inviting, yet functional space. I’ve been searching out some of my favorite design elements for farmhouse kitchens and I’m here to share them with you today.
7 Elements of the Best Farmhouse Kitchens
1. White Shaker Cabinets
White. That basically sums it up. White cabinets are the staple of a farmhouse kitchen. White is classic and timeless. It never gets outdated, as does cherry and other stained woods. And the fresh, clean look that the white cabinets give is a nice bonus. The hardware style is optional, as long as it coordinates with the overall design of your kitchen.
2. Farmhouse Sink
No farmhouse kitchen is complete without a farmhouse sink. Am I right? A farmhouse sink is pretty high up on my wish list right now and I’m loving this one that Liz Marie recently installed in her gorgeous kitchen!
3. Open Shelving
I believe that we can thank JoJo for the open shelving concept. It’s super cute, but it does limit your storage, so make sure you have other areas you can store some of your small appliances before you go “demo day” on your upper cabinets. You can check out Joanna’s Do’s & Don’ts of Open Shelving {HERE}.
4. Quartz Counter Tops
Marble counter tops are absolutely stunning. However, they are very costly and quite difficult to maintain.Β Quartz is a cheaper and much more durable option than marble. And how absolutely gorgeous are these quartz counter tops by Old Seagrove Homes!?
5. Eye Catching Backsplash
In my humble opinion, subway tile gives a classic farmhouse kitchen look. And believe it or not, it’s not very expensive. I recently installed a Faux Subway Tile Peel & Stick Backsplash in my kitchen as a temporary look until we remodel our kitchen.Β I’m super impressed with the way it looks! Other options for budget-friendly backsplash are shiplap, beadboard, or brick. The shiplap and beadboard would be fairly simple DIYs, but the brick may be a little more involved. I’d have to hire a professional on that one.
6. Unique Hood Vent
Hood vents over a range add so much character to a kitchen! I currently have a microwave over my range and while it is convenient, it’s not very pretty. I love the natural wood on this hood vent. I’ve also seen DIYs for shiplap hood vents that are beautiful.
7. Large Island
An island is the centerpiece of a kitchen. In my home, it’s the area that everyone gathers around. It’s where I prep meals while kids are doing homework and we all converse about our day. So for me, the bigger the island, the better. I love islands with the butcher block top. Also, an island is a good place to add a pop of color into your kitchen.
Alrighty friends, those are my 7 elements of the best farmhouse kitchens. I hope I’ve shared something that inspires you to create the kitchen of your dreams. I have mine all dreamed up in my head, and hopefully one day I’ll be able to turn that dream a reality.
Have a blessed day, beautiful friends! xoxo
Kitchen goals! I so love that farmhouse sink.
I know right! I “NEED” a farmhouse sink so desperately!! π
your kitchen is goals!
Thanks girl! These are my “goal” kitchens also. They are all gorgeous!!
Awesome list! Iβm saving this for when itβs our time to Reno our kitchen. In the next year! I love everything on your list. Especially the farm house sink. And big island with a pop of colour. Brilliant! Thanks so much.
Thank you, Jenna! I have so many plans for my kitchen, if only I had the budget. π
I want a farmhouse sink sooo bad! I just want a farmhouse house! haha I love all the elements and how all the colors just pop so boldy!
Meeee tooo girl!!! I guess for now we’ll just have to drool over these gorgeous kitchens. π
Love all the white! Love the white subway tile backsplash and open shelving concepts. Maybe in our next home I will get white cabinets…but for now I try to add farmhouse feels with my decor.
I agree, Lisa! Decor can make a big statement and be used to transform any space. It’s what I’m having to do for now also. π
I absolutely love all of the photos – I’ve been dying to redo our kitchen – old oak cupboards from the 80’s. Thanks for the inspiration π
Yay!! So glad this inspired you! I can’t wait to redo our kitchen – our cabinets are falling apart. Eek!
Yay I checked all the boxes!!! Good to know that I still on the right track LOL. Great post with love pictures.
That’s awesome, Jen! I wish I could say that I had all the boxes checked. Maybe in a year or so. π
Iβm in love with light fixtures!! Where can I find?
Ticked most of those but we did Carrara/venatino marble with zero regrets. Way more farmhouse in my mind than quartz (the photo looked more like quartzite to me)! I wish we had that vent hood! Ours is boring stainless!
Thanks for those tips, Amanda! My husband thinks we should go with the carrara also. I keep going back and forth. I guess I need to do a little more research on each.
I love this kitchen, and the lighting. Do you know what the counter and backsplash are made of in the photos? Any idea where the lighting was purchased?
Hi Diane! Unfortunately I do not. I have all of the photos linked to the original source. I would recommended reaching out to the owner of the photo you are referring to. Hope this helps!
Very nice article on farmhouse style. Thank you for the details provided.
