Hey hey! I’ve gotten a little behind on the blog this week and I’m trying to get caught up. I have so much to share with you all over these next few weeks. Lots of fun Christmas DIYs and some exciting home projects that we have been working on. But somehow there just isn’t enough hours in a day to get everything done. Today I’m sharing one of the projects that I’m reeeallllyy behind on. It was my intention to get this done and shared in the fall, but life happens. I’m going to show you guys how I made a DIY Christmas sign that doubles for fall (although I’ll have to wait until next year to use the fall side).

DIY Christmas Sign that Doubles for Fall
I actually saw a sign similar to this on Etsy and it was crazy expensive. I’ve made many signs using laser cut words from Little Touch of Heaven and noticed that she had exactly what I was looking for in a Christmas and Fall sign for an AMAZING price!
Supplies Needed:
Christmas & Fall laser cut letters
Any type of reclaimed wood (ie: pallet board, fence boards, etc.)
1×2 wood for frame
Dowel jig
Stain
Paint (in your color choices)
Wood glue
2 Heavy duty picture hangers
Picture wire
Steps:
My husband had a piece of 1×6 reclaimed wood that he cut into 3″ strips, for a total sign size of 27″ L x 36″ W. He attached the boards together using a dowel jig and wood glue. Once he had them all attached, he clamped them together for about 4 hours to let the glue dry.
I left one side of the sign raw wood and painted the other side with Rustoleum Chalk Paint in Linen White. Then he framed it out using a 1×2 that we stained with Minwax Special Walnut.
While he was making the frame, I prepared my letters. I painted the Christmas tree and pumpkin with Waverly Chalk Paint in the color Moss. I spray painted all of the letters for the DIY Christmas sign with Rustoleum Flat Black. And all of the letters for the Fall sign with Rustoleum Blossom White.
Once the sign was made and the letters were dry, I started laying out my Christmas words where I wanted them to be placed on the sign. I used the white side of the sign for Christmas. Once I got the placement right, I started to glue the letters/words down with Titebond Wood Glue. I just put a little glue at a time into a container, then I used a spouncer to dab the glue on the letters. You could also use a small craft paint brush if you’d prefer.
Once I had the Christmas side done, I let it dry for a few hours. Then I flipped the sign to the raw wood side and laid out my fall words before I started gluing them down. Tip: make sure you have the top of your sign on the same end for both signs before you start gluing.
Because it is a double-sided sign and fairly heavy, we had to get a little creative on how to hang it. We had some heavy duty picture hangers that my husband attached to the top of each corner. Then we attached a piece of picture wire from one end to the other. This way you can flip the sign both ways to hang it.
The Christmas Side
The letters didn’t come out perfectly straight and centered, but i’m okay with that. It just what I was looking for and I was able to get 2 signs out of this project for a steal of a price!
The Fall Side
This is the fall side of the sign on the natural wood. I lightly sanded the wood, but didn’t put any type of protective coat on it because I wanted to keep the rustic look.
Have you done any Christmas DIYs? If so, I’d love to hear what you’ve made in the comments below. I have a hard time spending a lot of money on seasonal items that I’ll only keep out for a short time. So I’m always looking for new ideas for holiday DIYs. If you missed my Christmas DIYs last year, you may enjoy a JOY Christmas Sign , Christmas Hoop Wreaths and DIY Christmas Topiary.
Hope you enjoyed. Have a great weekend, friends! And be blessed!! xoxo
I’m in love with this reversible sign. I have never seen a dowel jig, thats a new tool I will need to add to my workshop. It’s absolutely adorable! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Michelle! The dowel jig is definitely a handy tool for joining wood. We also used it to make our bed frame.
Heather I am so impressed! This is such a cool DIY, I didn’t know you could just buy the letters. I am totally doing this! Thank you so much!
Aww, thank you so much Wendy! I can’t wait to see yours!!!
That really is an awesome sign. Both sides are so special, great job!
Thank you, Laura! I really hoped to get it done to use for fall, but I’ll have to wait until next year. At least I got it done before Christmas. 😉
I Love this!!! Great Idea. Thank you for sharing. Always look forward to your post.
Thank you so very much, Kathy! Happy holidays to you my friend!
