Hey friends! I am so excited to share something really cool with you all today!!! You all are used to me doing lots of DIYs, but I bet you never would’ve thought that I’d be sharing a DIY Wireless Home Security System, did ya? Honesty, the thought of techie stuff kinda intimidates me. I’m much more of a get your hands dirty kinda gal. But y’all, this was soooo easy peasy that my 11 year old could’ve set this up. No joke!
We’ve been in our home for a little over 2 years now and we’ve never had a wireless home security system. I didn’t think much of that when we first moved into our home. We live in a small, rural town that has a very low crime rate. It seemed like we’d be just fine without a security system. Then a few things started to happen…
The Why
- I started this blog and have become a social media influencer over the last year. That has made me feel somewhat vulnerable. I’m basically doing a show and tell of my life, home and family for all the world to see. I want a system in place to keep my family safe and protected from the crazies of this world.
- Last Christmas, I had a gift stolen out of my car from right under my carport! I never ever would have thought that something like this would happen. It happened overnight while we were all asleep in the house. The thought of someone being under my carport while my family was asleep just creeps me out!
- I have a 5 year old boy that likes to go in and out of the house as he pleases and I have no way to know when he opens a door, if I’m not in the room. The fact that I’m now alerted every time a door or window is opened gives me a peace of mind.
So those are a few of the reasons why I’ve decided to install a wireless home security system.

DIY Wireless Home Security System
I’ve partnered with Cove Smart to show you how easy it is to DIY you very own Wireless Home Security System! As always, I will be sharing my very honest opinions on this product.
Before I forget, let me mention that Cove Smart was so awesome to give my readers a 20% discount on your purchase by using the code EDISCOUNT20. They are such an amazing company! You will see just how awesome and personal their services are when you get signed up.
Order & Delivery
I placed my order online. It was a very simple, step-by-step process (or maybe click-by-click would be a better way to put it). You enter how many windows and doors you have, whether or not you need a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, motion sensors, etc. Then you get to custom name each of the sensors, such as patio door, kitchen window, living room window 1, living room window 2, etc.
I placed my order on a Sunday and it was delivered to my doorstep by Tuesday. It was all packaged nice and neatly with the boxes being numbered in order of steps.
Happy Mail
The first box contained the control panel and the second boxes contained all of the alarm sensors. I ordered sensors for all of my windows and doors, a smoke detector, a carbon monoxide detector, a glass break detector for my large dining room window, a motion sensor, and 2 key remotes.
I ordered the motion sensor thinking I could put it under the carport, but then learned that the sensors are not made for outdoors. Also, I didn’t think about the fact that we would constantly have false alarms throughout the night with all the stray animals we have roaming around (life of a country girl).
Cove also sends you a cute yard sign and window stickers to alert everyone that your home is protected by a wireless home security system. My favorite part of the system is probably the wireless key remotes. You can arm and disarm your system with the press of a button. There is also an SOS button on the remote that you can press in an emergency.
Control Panel
I unpacked all of the boxes, eager to get started. The first and most difficult decision you will have to make is where to put your control panel. We decided to put ours in our bedroom so that we would have access to it when going to bed and waking up. And also during the night should, heaven forbid, it ever go off. It’s comforting to know that we can communicate with the monitoring company directly through the control panel.
My husband accidentally set off the alarm a few nights ago, and within seconds there was a live human voice, coming through the control panel, asking if we were okay. Right after that happened, my husband looked at me and said, “I feel so much more secure now that we have this system.” In addition, we both received a text message alerting us of the alarm. This is so awesome for when you are away from the home.
There is a bracket that you can use to mount the panel to the wall, but we decided to place ours on our night stand for convenience. The panel plugs in to an electrical outlet, but the rest of the security system is completely wireless.
When you turn the control panel on for the first time, it walks you through setting up the entire system. Everything has already been programmed into your control panel when you ordered it, so it will walk you through installing each sensor that you custom named. It is very easy to program additional sensors should you ever need to.
Sensors
The first sensor that we installed was our front door, which you can see in the photo above. The sensors have a peel and stick self-adhesive on the back. No worries if you have moldings on your doors and windows, the sensors will still work even if they aren’t completely even as long as the circles match up.
Once we had all of the sensors installed, the control panel ran through a test to check them all. After the test is complete, the system is ready to activate. We received a call through the control panel from the monitoring company who verified our information and then we were all set.
It took less than an hour to get the entire wireless home security system installed. I created a quick video as I walked through the installation to show you guys how easy peasy it is!
Safe & Secure
Having this wireless home security system in place has made our family feel so much safer! Not only from intruders, but from fires, carbon monoxide, and from protecting 5 year olds from wandering out of the house unannounced. Who knows, maybe we’ll even be able to entice that aforementioned 5 year old to sleep in his own bed now that we have this added layer of security. Because for some reason, he has no fear of wandering out of the house, but is scared to death of the dark (real world problems of 5 year olds).
So head on over to Cove Smart and see for yourself just how awesome they are! I promise you will love them (and I don’t make promises lightly). Don’t forget to use the code EDISCOUNT20 for 20% off of your order.
Have a blessed day, friends!! And stay safe! xoxo
You can never be too safe to keep your peace of mind! Those door and window chimes make you aware. My 7 year old knows better now than to open the door when it’s set to away/home. He found that out the hard way, lol. If you want to watch your outside, you can get a wireless camera system. When my husband had to stay away from home during the week, we purchased a wireless home security system and the wireless cameras, we even went as far as to get a German Shepherd to keep in the house. Some might think that is overboard, but we are our kids best and only protectors!
I completely agree, Crystal! You can never be too safe in today’s crazy world. We’ve been talking about getting the cameras also. At least we would’ve been able to get the thief on camera if we had them.
That’s a great idea, getting a security system. That’s truly scary that someone stole from your car in your driveway! You can never be too safe, that’s for sure. That’s strange you mentioned that about putting your life out there for all to see, being a blogger. I was thinking the other day after reading someone else’s blog, that y’all should be extra careful about how much you share on your blogs. Like covering your house numbers in front porch decorating tips and stuff like that. Because there are some really crazy people wandering around out there and it wouldn’t be hard for them to put two and two together and come up with where you all live. Call me paranoid, but better safe than sorry, you know? So good for you getting that alarm. I hope your other blogger friends follow your suggestion and get one too! Love your blog, by the way!
Shelia
I couldn’t believe it either, Shelia! I have a feeling it was a kid, but who knows. I also agree about bloggers protecting themselves and their families. There are just too many crazy people in the world today. Thank you so much for your kind words, Shelia! They mean so very much to me and are just the encouragement I need when I’m feeling burned out!!!
