Good day, Beauty For Ashes friends. Today is going to be so much fun! We are going to virtually decorate our living rooms together to give them all the farmhouse feels. We are going to have to use our imagination on this. So go grab a cup of coffee and get comfy for a few minutes. Okay, here we go!
Let’s start with pretending that we have beautiful shiplap walls (we are imagining, but if you really want to shiplap your walls, I have a step-by-step DIY here). It’s always best to start with a focal point and then work off of that. So, we’ll use the fireplace as our focal point.
We’ll begin by decorating our mantle. We are going to start with these 2 beautiful tobacco baskets. Stand them up vertically, with the larger one in the back and the smaller one in front of it (staggering them a little). Then place a sign of some sort in front of the baskets.
Okay, I get it. My descriptions are probably a little difficult to follow. Let me give you a visual of what this might look like.
That cotton stem is pretty farmhousey also (yes, sometimes I make up my own words). Let’s add that to our mantle as well. On either side of the baskets, place a Demijohn or some sort of glass vase with a neck and add the cotton stems. To give an extra touch, add wood bead garland wrapped around the neck of a demijohn. I have 2 posts on on how to make & style wood bead garland that you can check out if you’d like.
On the other side of the baskets, I would add a found item. Maybe some old, chippy spindles or corbels and a few vintage books. Here is a DIY for creating a chippy white look.
Next you are going to want to create a cozy space around the fireplace. To do this, add a crate or a basket on side of the fireplace and fill it with some textiles like blankets or pillows. Here are some of my favorite farmhouse baskets and throw pillows.
How comfy does this cable knit throw look!? Oh my, how I would love to snuggle up in that with a cup of coffee. Even though it is 100 degrees in Louisiana right now. I’d just have to turn the air way down low. You may want a cute farmhouse ladder to throw that blanket on when it’s not in use.
If you are really wanting to add all the farmhouse feels, this gorgeous jute rug will do the trick. It compliments just about any style and furniture. And how about this console table! Isn’t that the most beautiful chippy white farmhouse table ever!! Add a lamp and some greenery along with a few other decor items on the console to create a cozy farmhouse look.
If you are on a budget, like I am, painting thrift store or garage sale finds can save you a ton of money. You can check out how I scored this side table for $5 and flipped it with a little chalk paint and distressing. And you can grab this gorgeous Handlettered World Map on Etsy.
Whew, decorating is hard work. So much energy goes into studying each piece and making sure you can pull it all together to create a cohesive look. I hope this inspired you with a few ideas of how you can add some farmhouse charm into your living room.
I’m so thankful that you stopped by for a visit today! I’m just getting kicked off with this blog and I still have so much to learn, but one of the biggest reasons I decided to do this was to meet and connect with some of you. You gals are the reason I do this and I’d love to get to know you more. I’d love to connect with you by email or drop a comment below and introduce yourself so we can be buddies.
In the meantime, I’ll leave you with a few of my favorite farmhouse living room spaces to drool over.
If you love farmhouse style and you’ve never checked out Liz Marie Blog, you should head over there now for some inspo.
PIN FOR LATER:
I have been following you for a couple of months now and I really enjoy your posts. I am also in Louisiana and I totally understand the heat. I cook gumbo in the summer and turn the air conditioner way way down!?
Crystal, it’s so nice to meet you, my neighbor! Thank you so much for taking time to stop by my happy place. It really means so much to me! I agree, gumbo is the best… even in the heat of summer! 😉
Such a great post Heather! Love all the ideas of how to get a farmhouse look in the living room. I need to get some Demijohn’s…never knew that’s what they were called, LOL! 🙂
Thank you, Kari! I only learned what Demijohn’s were called about a year ago when I was in search of one. 😉
Once again, a superb post, Heather. I love your shopping suggestions and will definitely be checking out a few of them! And so sweet of you to share pics from other blogs too. All very inspiring!
Thanks, Lisa! I get so much inspiration from other blogs. 🙂
