You guys! I am soooo excited to share this post with you!! I’ve had a vision of this boys room makeover for a while now and I was finally able to bring it to life. And I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way it turned out!
I made over this boys room for my youngest son, who is 4. He’s been sleeping with my husband and I since he turned 1 and it’s time for a transition. Any of you mamas know what I mean? I’m not sure who this transition will be more difficult on, but we’re gonna give it a go and see what happens.
I figured a fun room makeover might be just what it takes to get him excited enough to sleep in his own room. I’ll keep you updated on how that works out. 😉
Boys Room Makeover
I had a vision for a monochrome boys room with a modern-vintage vibe (if that’s even such a thing). Many of the pieces were already picked out and stored in my head, I just needed to bring them all together. I love the black + white theme, but knew that I also wanted to include some wood elements to soften up the space some.

The Tapestry
I wanted to put something really simple above the bed. So, I worked with Cali Attwood Home to design this custom tapestry and I absolutely love the way it turned out! It includes a scripture that I pray my son always lives by.
The Bed
I’ve had my eye on these metal bed frames for quite some time and found this one on Amazon for an amazing price. I was a little nervous about the sturdiness of the bed because of the price, but it is actually very sturdy and well made. It was also pretty easy to put together, considering I was able to do it with only a little help from my 4 year old.
I love that the bed has 2 height levels. We put it at the lowest level for him now and can always adjust it later, should we desire.
The Bedding
When I ask my son what his favorite part of his new room is, he is quick to respond with “my bed!” And by bed, he means his new bedding from Beddy’s. I can’t even begin to tell you how much we looovve this bedding!! Of course, the DASH design was an absolute perfect fit for his room. You can get 20% off any order with the code BFA20.
Besides how amazing it looks, it is the most comfy bedding I have ever slept in. No joke! It has a cozy minky interior that is super soft and snuggly. I may or may not have slept with my son a time or two since he’s been in his new room. Actually, truth be told, he hasn’t slept in there alone yet. lol. But we’re working on it. Again, not sure who this is harder on.
And last, but certainly not least, this bedding is a zip to make. Literally! You just zip up the sides and voila, done! The best part, I don’t even have to ask my son to make his bed. He gets excited each morning to zip up his Beddy’s and that makes this mama happy, happy, happy. If you’d like to see him in action, you can check out my Instagram story titled “Beddy’s.”
The Beddy’s bedding came with the pillow cases and shams. I picked up the hi pillow and the plus sign blanket from Target to add a few more black accents.
I’m not even kidding when I tell you that my entire family wants a Beddy’s now, even my husband. If you’ve never visited their website, you should go check out all of the different styles they have. There truly is something for everyone in the family. Below is a good depiction of how our family feels about Beddy’s.
The Bedside Accessories
I’m sure that many of you know by now that I can’t complete a room without a few DIYs. I love to add unique pieces and put my own personal touch on spaces. The nightstands and crates were both DIYs that I’ll be sharing on the blog soon.
I shared this map of London by Grafomap with you all a few weeks ago and I’m still loving it in this space. If you’d like to hear the story of why I chose London, you can read it HERE.
In the crates, I stuck a few pillows that I picked up at Target.
I found the cute black and white globe at Target and knew it would be perfect in this space. The little explorer sign came from Hobby Lobby. I love buying signs from Hobby Lobby when they are half-off. I got this little cutie for only $7!
The Reading Wall
Now I get to show you my other favorite part of the room. The reading wall. My baby boy is about to start school and I wanted to create a space where he would be inspired to read and learn. My original idea was to put a pouf in this space, but there isn’t quite enough space.
This industrial metal wall rack was inspired by a playroom makeover I saw from one of my favorite bloggers, Sara at Little Vintage Nest. The minute I saw it, I knew that I had to have it for my boys room. I styled the wall rack with a few of our favorite books and the cute lined green chalkboard by the new Hearth & Hand collection at Target.
I ordered the read wall word from Little Touch of Heaven on Etsy. They have the cutest items and amazing prices! I found the vintage consonant cards at a local thrift shop. I knew I had to incorporate them in to this space somehow, so I clipped a few of them to some string to make a little banner and put the rest in one of the book baskets.
The Lighting
Alrighty y’all, I do a lot of DIYs, but lighting isn’t one of them. Until now. Because of my husband’s back injury, he wasn’t able to help me with a lot of the DIYs that he usually does. So it was up to me to get this light hung. I seriously felt like superwoman when I was done. haha. I climbed up on a ladder (in a dress) and wired this baby up (with a little coaching from the hubs, of course). He also turned off all the breakers first because I was a tiny bit concerned about getting electrocuted.
The light fixture and the gooseneck wall sconces all came from Amazon. And I can assure you that if I can install them, anyone can. 😉
The Rug & Window Treatments
Moving along to the rug and window treatments. I went with this Moroccan print rug that is a cream and grey color. I chose these colors over a black and white pattern to soften the space up some.
The black curtain panels and the rod are from Target. I like to use ring clips to hang my drapes because I like the look of it better and I also feel like they are easier to open and close.
The Dresser Wall
This vintage chest of drawers was one of my recent pickin’ finds. It needed a little TLC, but it was love at first sight. I love the character that the key holes and caster wheels add.
The large wall clock reminds me of an old schoolhouse clock. And the tick that it makes is the perfect white noise to put you to sleep at night.
I was looking for something to fit on the right side of the dresser and stumbled upon this chalkboard ruler growth chart that was the perfect fit. It will also be a neat way to keep up with my son’s growth.
The Handlettered Wall Map is by the sweet Allie of Allie Smith Designs on Etsy. She does some of the most beautiful handlettering that I’ve ever seen! By the way, I love shopping on Etsy because I love supporting small shops and crafters. And also because you can find lots of vintage goodies, like these vintage cash register flags.
This boys room makeover has been one of my favorites to date. Kids rooms are so fun to style. But, I must say that my favorite part of my son’s room is his excitement and love for it. He escorts all of our guests to his room to show it off. And every time he walks into his room, he thanks me. My heart melts. I don’t know that I will ever design a more special place.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this boys room makeover and have been inspired to create a space that you love. Be blessed, friends! xoxo
Fantastic job! Looks awesome.
Thank you so much, Karen! It was such a fun room to create!!
This room looks awesome! What little boy wouldn’t be proud to call this his own. I love that you included all the little details that make it fit him. Good luck on your mission to get him to sleep in his own bed — you weren’t wrong when you said it might be harder on you than him. I have a 7 year old that will still jump in bed with me and I secretly love every minute of it. The years are short 🙂
Sharon, what a sweet comment!! Thank you so much for your encouragement! Yes, the years are too short. I have a 14 year old son that would look at me like I was crazy if I tried to snuggle next to him. lol. So I’m trying to get all my snuggles in while I can. 😉
Awesome little boys room!! You have inspired me for my baby’s (ahem, 7 year old) room. Lol. The struggle is real, ðŸ˜I think it is a lot harder on us moms to let go. So snuggle as long as he will let you.
Thank you my dear! Kids rooms are so fun to create! So glad you found some inspo here. We are still struggling, we’ll maybe it’s just me. 😉
Heather all the elements you used to put your son’s room together are awesome. I love it.
Thank you so much, Sandy! It was such a fun space to put together!! 🙂
I didn’t see it addressed but I love the blanket on the foot of the bed going with the beddy set. Where was that from?
Thanks, Whitney! That is from Target (not sure if it’s still available).
